Celebrating the Story of our Nation
The story of Queen Anne’s County is the story of Maryland and the story of our Nation—from the indigenous people who inhabited the area for thousands of years to the colonists, indentured servants, enslaved and free Africans, revolutionaries, watermen and women, and farmers, among many others—trailblazers who struggled, persevered, and innovated while establishing livelihoods, raising families, and leaving us what we enjoy today in this early Maryland landscape.
Kent Island was the third permanent English settlement after Plymouth and Jamestown in what would become the United States of America. Old Wye Mill supplied Washington’s troops with nourishment during the Revolutionary War. Locals suspected of treason during the Revolution (and there were many) were tried at the Queenstown Colonial Courthouse.
The County, established in 1706, was home to several well-known Revolutionary figures such as William Paca, Matthew Tilghman, and Samuel Turbutt Wright. It was also home to some members of the famous Maryland 400 (Revolutionary War) and the 19th Regiment US Colored Troops (Civil War).
Much of the history of the County is visual—the rolling croplands that have been worked for centuries, the rural roads traveled by our ancestors, the abundant waters fished for thousands of years, the old churches and houses. Few places offer such a vast, and in many cases untouched, window to the past, and a great deal can still be felt, touched, heard, and fully experienced through our historic sites and stories.
Step into the past with us as we commemorate the last 250 years and beyond—join us to explore, engage, and enjoy.
