Kick off to Crab Season 2022
There is nothing more exciting about spring then the opening of crab season on April 1st. Although crabs may not be plentiful until later in the summer, this return of crabbing brings with it plenty of good feelings and often a sense of anticipation for the year ahead.
Many of our local tiki bars and crab houses also make a return about this time of year and our charter boats begin to welcome eager anglers from across the region. Here are a few places and trips to check out if you are visiting the area.
#1 Fisherman’s Crab Deck – this open-air seafood “crab deck” is open seasonally and located right next door to their traditional seafood restaurant which started it all. From the Kent Narrows area you can dock and dine at a number of destinations, but the crab deck has that open-air crab house personality you may be craving and they have the messy crab picking system down pat.
#2 Big Owl Tiki Bar – Also seasonal, this tiki bar is a locals favorite and will give you that summer time island vibe with palm trees and work boats docked nearby, the venue hosts plenty of live music throughout the season and sometimes band are even hosted by floating barge!
#3 Harris’s Crab House – Another solid go to that know hard crabs and oysters. They operate their own aquaculture oyster program and process local Chesapeake Bay seafood right next door. They also feature a deck top dessert / cafe for those staying in the area looking for a morning coffee fix before or after hitting the nearby Cross Island Trail.
#4 Kentmorr Seafood Restaurant & Crab House – Looking for those Chesapeake Bay views? Kentmorr is tucked next to the Kentmorr Marina and sits right on the Chesapeake Bay. Many locals boat to the Marina and then enjoy a visit to the crab house and adjacent beach bar! It’s a great place to soak up that Chesapeake Bay lifestyle after a morning out fishing or crabbing with our local charter watermen.
#5 Jetty Dock Bar & Restaurant – You can arrive by car or boat (free docking) to enjoy seafood. Maryland Crab and spectacular views of the Eastern Bay. Savor the American cuisine and happy hour specials in a dog-friendly environment. Live Music on the man made beach area or in a jetty table swing. The Jetty beach area can be reserved for private events and occasions.
