Kent Island Heritage Center: Open every Saturday in September and October, Noon – 4 pm Discover more than 400 years of rich local history at the Kent Island Heritage Center, located at 310 Love Point Road in Historic Stevensville. Opened in May in the renovated 1870 Queen Anne’s County School House, the Center serves as a museum as well as the Kent Island Heritage Society headquarters, where stories of early Maryland are brought to life. Explore the archaeological record of Kent Island’s early Native American inhabitants as well as those who traded with William Claiborne after he established Kent Fort in 1631. Examine the millstone from Clayford Plantation, where Claiborne resided. View the ship’s bell from the 1929 ferry, the John M. Dennis. And take a look at the decoy collection documented in the book, “The Forgotten Seven: The Decoy Carvers of Kent Island.” There is so much more to see—and talk about with knowledgeable docents—in this treasure trove of history. Additional Kent Island Historical Sites—Historic Christ Church, The Cray House, the Stevensville Train Station (and caboose), the Stevensville Bank Building, the Old Stevensville Post Office, and the James E. Kirwan House and Store—are open for free tours on the first Saturday of each month from noon – 4:00 through November, while the Kent Island Heritage Center will be open every Saturday in September and October, the first Saturday in November, and by special request.
