First Saturdays free tours: Kennard African American Cultural Heritage Center
May 2 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Opened in 2017 as a center for African American history programs and events (including book clubs, classes, and exhibits), this one-time high school for African American students (est. 1936) was named for education trailblazer Lucretia Kennard. Enjoy a remarkable museum and resource library that chronicles local, state, and national African American life. In addition to a Juneteenth celebration, later in 2026, the Heritage Center property will feature the United States Colored Troops memorial statue honoring Queen Anne’s County Black Civil War soldiers.
