February is Black History Month

February is National Black History Month and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, including Queen Anne’s County, is excited to share opportunities to explore the lives of national and everyday heroes like local watermen, farmers, abolitionists.

Although the number of special events has decreased because of the residual impacts of COVID-19 pandemic, our area offers a few different opportunities to explore and appreciate the local stories of Queen Anne’s County.

1. The Black Watermen Captains of the Chesapeake – explore Kent Narrows and learn more about the lives of black boat captains centered around the community of Grasonville, Maryland. While you are in the area, Kent Narrows / Grasonville, MD.
2. Visit the Kennard African American Cultural Center. You can view video presentations, explore exhibits and learn more about local watermen, business owners, educators and community leaders. Centreville, MD.
3. Civil War Trail – Visit the village of Queenstown and learn more about how local Eastern Shore communities grappled with the impacts of the civil war, including the role emancipation in conscription into the Union Army.
